PETALUMA, CA — An 18-year-old Petaluma man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm and other charges in connection with an incident earlier this week at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma.

Around 8 p.m. Monday, police responded to the park where the 18-year-old victim said two other 18-year-olds confronted him over some comments he allegedly made, Petaluma police Lt. Ed Crosby said.

"The victim was personally familiar with the subjects, one of whom challenged the victim to fight," Crosby said.

The victim declined to fight but as he got into his car to leave, the suspect, identified as Jeancarlos Gallegos, pointed a gun at the victim's head, Crosby said.

Petaluma PD officers and detectives followed up on the incident, which involved conducting surveillance on Gallegos into the next morning.

As Gallegos left his home Tuesday morning, police were there and placed him under arrest.

"Detectives then served search warrants at the residence, recovering a semi-automatic pistol and ammunition," Crosby said.

Gallegos was booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm and related charges.

Jail records Thursday showed Gallegos was being held in lieu of $1 million pending a court appearance set for Thursday afternoon.

Petaluma police noted that Gallegos has a case pending with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office for a suspected gun offense in September.

Police asked anyone with information about the Petaluma incident to call Petaluma police Detective Matt Parnow at 707-778-4444.
