Powerhouse Mitty ends Casa Grande boys' hoop season

Rodriguez stars in Gauchos' defeat

SAN JOSE – Casa Grande High’s boys basketball finally met its match. 

Top-seeded Archbishop Mitty jumped to an early lead, then blew the game open and rolled to a 71-43 win the Northern California Division I Tournament on Thursday.

The Gauchos got another superb scoring effort from senior guard Joey Rodriguez. He finished with 23 points. Center Josh Hayworth scored 10 points, but suffered as the talented Mitty frontcourted dominated the boards. Casa Grande had only 15 rebounds and no player had more than two boards.

Casa Grande went on a run to cut Mitty’s lead to just seven points at halftime. The highly-ranked Monarchs exploded after intermission to put the game out of reach.

Casa Grande finished the season with a 27-6 record. Mitty is 29-2.

St. Mary’s of Stockton awaits Mitty on Saturday at 7 p.m. in San Jose.
