SRJC 100th Anniversary Celebration Events Continue Through 2018

Upcoming events at both the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses include a community breakfast, a picnic and more.

From Santa Rosa Junior College: Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) continues its year-long celebration of 100 years of excellence throughout 2018. Upcoming events include lectures, art exhibits, theatre performances, athletic events, fundraisers and more, hosted throughout the Sonoma County Junior College District (SRJCD).

With a theme of “Pride, Purpose and Progress,” the SRJC college community is looking back with pride at past accomplishments, focusing on its purpose of providing an excellent education to all, and its progress looking forward toward the future.

Admission to most events is free of charge. A few notable exceptions are fundraisers including:

  • 20th in History Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, April 7, Santa Rosa Campus, sponsored by the Bear Cub Athletic Trust
  • 100th Anniversary Celebration Dinner, May 31, Santa Rosa Campus, sponsored by the SRJC Foundation
  • 7th Annual Building Community Breakfast, June 7, Petaluma Campus, sponsored by the Friends of Petaluma Campus Trust

“What if women built a community college – and EVERYone came?” a lecture by Gaye LeBaron, Sonoma County historian, columnist and long-time SRJC community member.

  • Thursday, March 29, 12 noon to 1:00 p.m., Girvin Family Student Activity Center, Lawrence A. Bertolini Student Center, Santa Rosa Campus. Co-sponsored by SRJC Arts & Lectures and presented in conjunction with SRJC Women’s History Month.

Acclaimed historian, Press Democrat journalist and SRJC alumna Gaye LeBaron will provide an insightful historical overview of Sonoma County, shedding light on the role and legacy of Santa Rosa Junior College.

“History of Women at SRJC: By the Numbers,” a lecture by Dr. KC Greaney, SRJC Director of Institutional Research.

  • Monday, April 16, 12:30-1:30, Girvin Family Student Activity Center, Lawrence A. Bertolini Student Center, Santa Rosa Campus.

The talk will provide fascinating facts about women as students, instructors, administrators, trustees, and more for the past 100 years.

“100 Years: Countless Stories” Art Reception & Exhibit, plus Book Release

  • Thursday, April 5, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (Exhibit continues through July 26). Herold Mahoney Library Gallery, Petaluma Campus

The exhibit features SRJC alumni and the stories they share about the life-changing impact of the College, and is co-sponsored by SRJC Arts & Lectures. The new Santa Rosa Junior College 100th Anniversary History book, "Acorn to Oak," will be presented for the first time at this reception and then available for purchase throughout 2018. The book includes photos and text representing each decade of SRJC’s history.

“Veritas” Sculpture and Time Capsule

  • Wednesday, April 18, 12:00 noon, on the Quad in front of the Frank P. Doyle Library

This project is a collaboration between SRJC students, SRJC instructor Michael McGinnis, a world-renowned artist and inventor, and The Engineering Club (TEC). Master sculptor McGinnis and his students are fabricating “Veritas,” a sculpture that reflects our search for truth with its labyrinthian pathway of interconnected elements. TEC students are building the time capsule and the base on which the sculpture will be placed.

The Spirit of SRJC Picnic

  • Saturday, September 22, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Santa Rosa Campus

The picnic will be an old-fashioned event with games, barbecue and birthday cake. Great for the entire family, and a chance to connect with staff, alumni, and old friends.

Additionally, a number of SRJC’s annual events will have a special 100th Anniversary Theme this year. Some of these events will be:

  • “Day Under the Oaks & Fountain Dedication: 100 Years of Academic Excellence” on Sunday, May 6th at the SRJC Santa Rosa Campus.
  • “100th Anniversary Fall Festival” on Saturday, October 13 at Shone Farm.
  • “100th Anniversary LumaFest” on Saturday, October 20 at the SRJC Petaluma Campus.
