Suspected DUI Driver Hits Hydrant, Tree In Petaluma: Police

A Petaluma man is suspected of driving under the influence in the solo-vehicle crash, according to police.

PETALUMA, CA — A Petaluma man is accused of DUI after crashing his pickup truck into a fire hydrant and a tree.

A 911 call came into the Petaluma Police Department at 8:02 p.m. Saturday about the solo-vehicle collision on Sonoma Mountain Parkway, east of Wellington Place, police Sgt. Ryan Suhrke said.

The caller said a truck had hit a fire hydrant and come to rest on a sidewalk.

"In addition to a fire hydrant, at least one tree was struck and knocked over, blocking the sidewalk," Suhrke said. "The Public Works Department responded to clear the roadway but were unable to fully clear the sidewalk at the time."

As officers spoke with the driver, identified as 41-year-old Daniel Sutter, it is alleged that Sutter displayed signs of alcohol intoxication, Suhrke said.

Sutter was arrested on suspicion of DUI but because he was injured in the crash he was taken to a hospital, not to jail, police said.

The incident remains under investigation; anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Matt Williams at 707-778-4372 or mwilliams@cityofpetaluma.org.
