Three Teens Were In Saturday's High-Speed Crash On Hwy 101: One Dead; Two Injured

A teenage girl was killed in a crash that injured two others on U.S. Highway 101 in Santa Rosa early Saturday morning after a pursuit that started in Windsor, according to the California Highway Patrol and Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 1:30 a.m., a Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy saw a person recklessly driving on southbound Highway 101 in Windsor at speeds of more than 100 mph, sheriff’s Lt. Greg Miller said.

The deputy followed the suspect car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the vehicle continued traveling south at a high rate of speed on the freeway, Miller said. Another deputy assisted in the chase that continued south on Highway 101 into Santa Rosa, according to Miller.

The driver lost control of the car while traveling on the off-ramp at Hearn Avenue and the car crashed into a field south of the exit, he said.

The driver, a 17-year-old Ukiah girl, was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said. The front passenger, another 17-year-old girl from Ukiah, was ejected from the car, according to Sloat.

A rear passenger, 19-year-old Boonville man, was also injured in the crash, Sloat said. The girl and man who survived the crash were transported to a hospital for major to moderate injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Sloat.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash because open containers were found in the vehicle, Sloat said.
