OAKLAND, CA — Two people were shot Sunday when a KPIX-TV news crew was robbed of a camera and tripod while covering Oakland teachers' strike-related activities, Oakland police said Sunday night.

A news crew security guard was shot in the leg and hospitalized, police said, and one of the suspects was also shot and injured by fire returned by the injured guard.

Oakland police said in a statement Sunday night that the three-person KPIX-TV crew - including reporter Joe Vasquez and photographer John Anglin - was stationed in the 1000 block of 81st Avenue at about 5 p.m. Sunday, reporting on strike-related activities, when a vehicle pulled up to them. At least two people got out and robbed the three-person news crew at gunpoint, according to Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson. The guard, a retired Berkeley police officer, returned fire.

The crew's security guard was listed in stable condition Sunday night, Watson said.

At 5:15 p.m., a man with gunshot wounds walked into Highland Hospital. He has been arrested in connection with the robbery.

Then, shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, Oakland police were involved in a brief pursuit of a suspect believed to be connected to the robbery. That vehicle crashed at the corner of 55th and Bancroft Avenues in the Seminary neighborhood, Watson said, and police then detained the driver, the car's only occupant.

Oakland police have since detained several other people in connection with the TV crew armed robbery, said Watson, who noted that some of the camera equipment has already been recovered.
