City of Oakland Approves Tiny Homes and Homeless Youth Housing Projects

Anian Tunney, Piedmont CA real estate agent broker associate with Grubbco, shares information on some new housing projects in Oakland.

A tiny home design contest was sponsored by the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District and was held in October. A team of students from Laney College’s carpentry department beat out teams from Stanford University and UC Berkeley to win the $4,000 prize. As a result, the Laney College team was chosen by the Oakland City Council for an $80,000 agreement to design and build two prototype tiny homes with technology that could be mass-produced. One big benefit of the Laney College design is that the tiny homes have plumbing, kitchens and heating systems that are easily moved. (1)

Another consideration for the tiny homes is location. The Laney College campus has space, and property owners with vacant lots have also contacted Councilman Abel Guillen’s office offering their land for use in this manner.

Oakland will also be spending a $1 million grant on a rapid rehousing program for homeless youth. The rapid rehousing money will be divided among three non-profits, Covenant House, East Oakland Community Project, and First Place for Youth. These organizations administer the new North County Homelss Youth Rapid Rehousing Program. Listed for sale is the Hampton House, a world-class Piedmont estate, offered at $7,995,000.
