Oakland Police: Person of Interest in Killing of 14-Year-Old Boy Identified

A person of interest has been identified in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Oakland last Saturday, police Chief Sean Whent said this week. Speaking at an unrelated news conference in East Oakland Thursday, Whent said the person of interest in the death of Davon Ellis is already in custody for an alleged offense that occurred outside of Oakland.

The police chief declined to provide more details and said the investigation is ongoing. Davon, a ninth-grade student at Oakland Technical High School, was walking with friends when he was shot at about 7:50 p.m. Saturday in the 3300 block of Brookdale Avenue in the city’s Fruitvale district, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Bishop Robert Jackson, the senior pastor of Acts Full Gospel Church of God in Christ, was also at today’s news conference and said a funeral service for Davon is scheduled for 11 a.m. on March 17 at the church at 1034 66th Ave. Jackson said Davon’s case was another example of people in Oakland dying too young.

“I’m doing more funerals than I’d like to talk about,” he said.

Oakland police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. Oakland police said anyone with information about the shooting should call the department’s homicide section at (510) 238-3821.
