
A teacher at Melrose Leadership Academy in Oakland may go to New Zealand as a Fulbright award winner, officials with the U.S. Department of State announced this month.
The U.S. state department and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has offered second grade teacher Nessa Mahmoudi a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching grant to New Zealand.
Mahmoudi is one of about 49 U.S. citizens selected to travel overseas through the 2015-2016 Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program.

Alumni of the Fulbright program have achieved distinction in a variety of fields of service. Fifty-three have been awarded the Nobel Prize and 85 have received a Pulitzer Prize.
