San Francisco Housing Prices Compared to Other Cities Worldwide
Anian Tunney, Piedmont real estate agent broker associate discusses Economist article about housing costs in worldwide cities.

As residents of the San Francisco Bay Area, it comes as no surprise to us that housing prices in San Francisco are among the most expensive in the country. What you may not realize, is that according to The Economist(1) San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the world, based on housing costs, and year over year rising prices. The Economist considers San Francisco a “Globalized City” because it attracts people from all over the world for the economic opportunities along with the desirable climate and geography.
San Francisco has the third highest house-price inflation in the world, over the last 3 years, following only Sydney, Australia and London, England. After San Francisco come Shanghai, China, Vancouver, Canda and Berlin, Germany.
What’s interesting about San Francisco housing prices is that they correlate at a 93 percent rate with the monthly movements of the NASDAQ, because the area’s economy is so tech-heavy.

Because of the soaring housing prices in San Francisco, many residents are making the move to Oakland and other East Bay cities, where prices are lower, and the commute into San Francisco isn’t too bad with BART. The Oakland Hills, Berkeley, Piedmont and Montclair are among some of the very desirable areas that are starting to see greater than average housing price increases.
