Police have arrested two people suspected of carjacking a vehicle with a semi-automatic handgun in Pinole and are searching for a third, officials said today. Officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking at 6:52 a.m. on Wednesday in the 800 block of Patrick Drive in Pinole, police said.

Witnesses told police that three suspects drove up to the victim’s house in a newer-model white Honda. Two men got out of the car and got into the victim’s running vehicle, a 2002 White GMC Yukon, where the victim’s two children, ages 9 and 13, were sleeping, police said. The suspects, who were armed with a silver semi-automatic handgun, ordered the children out of the car before driving away in the victim’s vehicle followed by the white Honda, police said.

Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputies located the Yukon in the unincorporated Bay Point area early this morning, police said. But when the deputies tried to stop the vehicle, police said the suspects ran away. Deputies caught up with the suspects and arrested Martin Chavez, 23, of Bay Point and Walter Chavez O’Farrell, 22, of Pittsburg and booked them in the Martinez Detention Facility.
