Heat Advisory: High Temperatures Expected in East Bay

A heat advisory is in effect for large portions of the Bay Area today from wine country to Silicon Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to rise to the upper 90s and potentially as high as 108 degrees in inland areas of Contra Costa and Alameda counties, with the heat peaking on Wednesday afternoon. But high temperatures are expected all over.

The heat advisory covers large areas of Sonoma, Marin, Napa and Solano counties in the North Bay as well as Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties in the South Bay. Coastal areas will still be warm, but sea breezes will keep it from getting quite as hot as inland areas. Residents are advised to use caution when going outside today and Wednesday, particularly those at greater risk to heat illnesses, such as the elderly or infirm.

Health officials in the region are reminding residents to drink lots of water, dress in lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, limit physical activity, do any outside labor in the early morning or evening and to watch out for pets and make sure they have enough water and shade.

Anyone who needs to get out of the heat should go to a public library or community center. Cooling centers may be available in area senior centers and other locations. A list of potential cooling centers in Contra Costa County is available at cchealth.org/heat/cool-locations.php.
