Now you can take a family outing without taking the car out of the garage.

Officials with two Oakland attractions are thrilled with new weekend Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District service to their venues.
AC Transit will start bus service Sunday to the Chabot Space & Science Center and the Oakland Zoo.
Service will operate on both Saturday and Sunday on subsequent weekends.

“It’s great to have another way to get down and up,” Chabot Space & Science Center spokeswoman Autumn King said. King said some people are taking a break from driving on the weekend, so this gives them another way to get to the center.
The service is also a way for teenagers participating in the center’s Galaxy Explorer program to get to the center when their parents cannot take them.

AC Transit line 339 will operate every 40 minutes to the center from 9 a.m. to 9:40 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The late hours on Sunday will allow members of the center to attend telescope viewings and movies without driving.
Zoo officials said they are ecstatic about the announcement. “We are thrilled that AC Transit is expanding weekend service to Oakland Zoo,” chief financial officer Nik Dehejia said in a statement. The new service allows residents to travel by bus to the zoo seven days a week.
AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson said residents have been requesting the new service for a long time. Zoo employees will also benefit, as they will be able to take the bus to work on the weekends. AC Transit’s line 46 will take visitors to the zoo every hour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In the summer, the line will run every 30 minutes. The bus stop is located at the zoo’s lower entrance, by the Wayne and Gladys Valley Children’s Zoo.
