2020 Alameda County Fair Canceled Amid Coronavirus Concerns
This marks the Alameda County Fair's first cancellation in 108 years, event organizers said.

PLEASANTON, CA — The Alameda County Fair has been canceled as a result of the new coronavirus pandemic, officials announced Thursday.
This is the first cancellation in its 108-year history, the Alameda County Agricultural Fair Association said in a statement. Nearly 500,000 people attend the 18-day event in Pleasanton, which brings in some $32 million, creates 900 jobs and boosts business to nearby businesses such as hotels and restaurants.
State officials have said mass gatherings will not be permitted until California has drugs to treat COVID-19, which experts say could take months or longer.

The event was previously slated for June 19 to July 12.
“The health and safety of guests, staff, and partners continues to be our number one priority, our team is updating protocols and guidelines so that when allowed, we can safely welcome the community back to the venue," said fair CEO Jerome Hoban in the statement.

Pleasanton Weekly first reported the cancellation.
Though large events are banned at the fairgrounds, health care workers have revamped the space into a COVID-19 testing site for residents of Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore.
The Alameda County Agricultural Fair Association said it will continue to support COVID-19 efforts and is exploring the possibility of holding some events virtually, such as fair contests and the Jr. Livestock Auction.
Live horse racing may continue this summer without spectators.
Should conditions improve, the association said it is considering holding an event for the community in October.
