Wednesday's high is expected to reach about 101 degrees, with slightly cooler temperatures later in the week. Locals can escape the heat at the Pleasanton Library, and the city may open additional cooling centers during extreme conditions.

Pleasanton council approves rezoning of two church sites to allow for housing (pleasantonweekly.com) β Pleasanton's City Council has approved rezoning parts of Trinity Lutheran and Rock Bible churches so up to 10 housing units could eventually be built on each site, a move tied to keeping the city's state-required Housing Element certified. Councilmembers and nearby neighbors voiced misgivings, but officials warned rejecting the change could jeopardize Pleasanton's compliance with California housing laws.

San Ramon teen, friend attacked at apartment complex in Pleasanton on Labor Day (pleasantonweekly.com) β Pleasanton police are investigating a Labor Day attack at the Eaves Pleasanton apartments that left two visiting teenage boys from San Ramon and San Leandro injured, one with multiple arm lacerations. Detectives believe the teens were specifically targeted and are asking anyone with information to contact Pleasanton police as they work to identify the masked assailants.

Berkeley officials sound alarm after 5 bats test positive for rabies (cbsnews.com) β Health officials are warning East Bay residents after five bats in Berkeley tested positive for rabies and a separate rabies-positive cat was confirmed in Pleasanton in late June. Pleasanton-area pet owners are urged to keep vaccinations current, avoid handling bats or unknown animals, and seek immediate medical care and report any bites or scratches to local health authorities.
