Update: Fire Near Sunol Regional Wilderness Fully Contained

A 45-acre brush fire that started Friday morning in Alameda County is now 100 percent contained, Cal Fire tweeted tonight. Cal Fire tweeted at 8:05 p.m. that firefighters had completely contained the fire near Geary and Calaveras Roads, just outside the Sunol Regional Wilderness.

Firefighters are still working to extinguish a 45-acre brush fire in Alameda County near the Sunol Regional Wilderness that broke out early Thursday morning, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said today.

As of around 9:45 a.m., the fire was roughly 75 percent contained but it is no longer growing, Cal Fire spokeswoman Pam Temmermand said. Temmermand said heavy vegetation in the area makes battling the blaze more time consuming. “The terrain it’s in, there’s heavy grass and brush,” Temmermand said, adding fire crews are also navigating steep slopes and drainage ditches.

Firefighters responded around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday to a fire near Geary and Calaveras roads, Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said. The fire had burned roughly 20 acres and was 20 percent contained at about 8:50 a.m. on Thursday.

As of around 3:30 p.m., it had doubled in size, according to Cal Fire officials. Temmermand said there’s no estimated time for when the fire will be completely extinguished.
