PLEASANTON, CA – This year's National Night Out, the annual evening to promote police partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 7. And sign-ups are underway for Pleasanton neighborhoods interested in having event drop-ins from the Pleasanton Police Department, the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and city or state officials.

Applications are available in the police department lobby or online here, and the deadline is Friday, July 27.

Millions of neighbors in thousands of communities across the U.S. take part in National Night Out, started in 1984, on the first Tuesday in August with block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and often with such activities as safety demonstrations and visits from emergency personnel.

"Pleasanton PD started participating in National Night Out nearly 20 years ago with four neighborhood block parties," the department said. "The event now has over 40 block parties! Parties vary from potlucks and BBQs to ice cream socials and have included live bands, bounce houses and kids parades.

"Parties who register with the police department before the deadline may be visited by the Pleasanton Police Department, elected city and state officials, the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and a host of allied agencies."

The effort's goal is to heighten crime and drug awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, police said.
