Driver Convicted In Deadly San Ramon Crash Sentenced To Prison

16 months after the tragic 2016 wreck, Pleasanton resident Yarenit Liliana Malihan pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Pleasanton resident Yarenit Liliana Malihan, 40, was sentenced in Contra Costa County Superior Court to seven years in prison after being convicted of vehicular manslaughter following a fatal 2016 crash in San Ramon, court officials said.

Malihan, who was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter with multiple victim enhancements. Malihan, the wife of Alameda County sheriff's deputy, faced a maximum of 11 years if convicted of the initial charges.

The crash occurred at 6:20 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2016, in the area of Interstate 680 near Bollinger Canyon Road. Elijah Dunn, 3, was killed and his siblings and mother were seriously injured, when their car, which was stopped on the side of the freeway, was struck. Following a lengthy investigation, Malihan surrendered to CHP investigators in Dublin in May.

The district attorney's office alleged that Malihan, whose toxicology reports revealed the presence of drugs in her blood, lost control of her vehicle and collided with the Toyota Camry stopped on the shoulder. Following her September arrest, Malihan was treated for minor injuries at San Ramon Regional Medical Center and booked into the county jail. Malihan was driving on a provisional license the night of the tragic crash as the result of another alleged DUI-related crash in Pleasanton in June of 2016.

Malihan was arrested again in May of 2017– this time in Pleasanton on suspicion of public intoxication, according to police records. The Pleasanton Police Department arrest log shows Malihan was arrested at 2:47 p.m. on May 12 in the 5500 block of West Las Positas.
