Fair's Big Green Race Challenges Kids, Teens to Use Physical and Brain Power

One of the new activities at the Alameda County Fair this year is the Big Green Race, where teens and young kids complete challenges and learn about the environment at the same time.

Think the "Amazing Race," but with an environmental theme and kids running around the Alameda County Fair. That was how organizers described the first ever Big Green Race, held on June 27.

Teams received clues and had to complete complete activities that had some "green" focus.

At one station, they tossed recyclables into appropriate bins. At another stop, the teams had to put together a global warming skit that required participation of other fairgoers.

The winning team was determined by acquiring points--bonus points for completing the challenges and working well together and point deductions for those who break the rules or are disruptive to fair visitors.

At the end of the day, the activities were supposed to teach participants about people's impacts on the earth while still having fun. Winners were given gift certificates.
