No Arrest to be Made of Driver Involved in Crash That Killed Pleasanton Teen

The tragic accident occurred on Sunday evening.

Police will not be arresting the driver of a Mercedes-Benz that struck and killed an Amador Valley High School student Sunday evening in Pleasanton, police said.

Jorge Barraza, 17, was identified as the boy struck and killed by the Mercedes around 6:20 p.m. near the intersection of Abbie and First streets, according to police. A witness told police the black 2010 Mercedes was traveling south on First Street at about the speed limit, around 25 or 30 mph, when Barraza ran out in front of the vehicle from the east sidewalk. Barraza ran out into the street in a diagonal southwest direction about 30 feet south of the crosswalk at First and Abbie streets, according to the witness, a Livermore resident who was traveling north in a vehicle on First Street, police said.

Police and paramedics tried to save Barraza’s life, but he died at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes told police he did not see the boy before the collision, according to police. The driver of the Mercedes and a passenger were from the Stanislaus County area and were driving through Pleasanton, police said.

The driver cooperated with officers after the collision and submitted to a blood test even though officers did not smell alcohol on him after the collision. He will not be arrested unless the blood test results show he was intoxicated, according to police. Officers took the Mercedes as evidence to check whether it was operating properly, police said.

A counselor and school psychologist at Amador Valley High School are raising money for Barraza’s family. The GoFundMe effort has raised more than $24,000 for funeral and other expenses the family might have because of the death of their son.
