Pleasanton Senior Living Resident Tests Positive For Coronavirus

The patient is hospitalized and the facility was deep-cleaned, an administrator said in a letter sent Saturday.

PLEASANTON, CA — A resident of Sunrise Senior Living tested positive for the new coronavirus, according to an email sent Saturday from a facility administrator to residents and families. The resident has been hospitalized and no others are experiencing symptoms.

Sunrise Executive Director Melissa Malek said in the letter that the community was receiving a deep cleaning and closely tracking team members, who will wear protective gear while caring for people experiencing respiratory symptoms.

"We understand that this news is extremely concerning," she wrote. "Please know that we are well-prepared to respond to this situation."

Prior to learning the patient had tested positive, Sunrise said it instituted restrictions including: canceling community activities; moving residents to their suites; switching to in-room dining; and prohibiting visitors in most circumstances, Malek wrote.

Sunrise said in an emailed statement that it is arranging FaceTime visits with family on iPads and organizing virtual museum tours and symphony orchestra concerts.

Sunrise is working with local health officials and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, and operates its own infection control and prevention program in line with CDC guidelines.

"Sunrise has nearly 40 years of experience caring for seniors, and infection control has always been part of our everyday operations, given seniors’ increased susceptibility to many communicable illnesses," Sunrise said in the statement.

The announcement comes days after Bay Club confirmed a child care employee tested positive for the virus. The facility was closed before the company learned of the worker's positive test and continues to be cleaned.
