PLEASANTON, CA — Many humans may have been on break the past few weeks, but woodpeckers never stop. Abhijit Shetti noticed this woodpecker and several others storing acorns in the trees along a trail near Martin Avenue and Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area.

Woodpeckers like to hide their acorns in trees to protect them from other animals and allow them to dry out, sort of like storing your valuables in a safe. Some woodpeckers go a little overboard, like the one who stored 700 acorns in the walls of a Santa Rosa home.

"I didn’t know woodpeckers had so much of an organized society," Shetti noted. "This fellow was responsible for "re-shelving” all the nuts securely. He just kept going up and down the tree taking loose nuts and putting them in new holes. Others were responsible for making new holes."
