Earthquake Near Lake Henshaw Rattles San Diego County

Shaking was reported across San Diego County and in parts of Orange and Riverside counties.

LAKE HENSHAW, CA — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.6 was recorded Tuesday morning near Lake Henshaw, and shaking was reported across San Diego County and in parts of Orange and Riverside counties.


Update: Second Earthquake Shakes San Diego County


The quake was recorded at 9:21 a.m. roughly 1.5 miles southeast of Lake Henshaw, a reservoir at the base of Palomar Mountain.

The temblor was centered approximately:

  • 7.4 miles east-northeast of Warner Springs
  • 11.2 miles northwest of Palomar Observatory
  • 20.8 miles west-southwest of Escondido
  • 33.7 miles west of Oceanside
  • 38.8 miles southwest of San Diego

The quake was felt across the county, from Carlsbad to Chula Vista, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. People as far as Temecula in Riverside County and San Juan Capistrano and Aliso Viejo in Orange County reported feeling the quake.
