Abandoned Goats Get New Chance At Life, Thanks To South OC Community

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Two goats that were abandoned on an Orange County mountainside are now on their way to a forever home, thanks to the efforts of concerned residents and donations offered by the community.
Orange County resident Sadie Marvick told Patch that the two goats, now named Carson and Gus, were rescued earlier in the month after her brother spotted the goats while he was out dirt biking on Saddleback Mountain.
"It was clear they were domestic from their friendly and trusting demeanors," Marvick said. "We all put our heads together and were able to get them rescued."

Once the goats were rescued — an effort that took several trips up and down Saddleback Mountain — it became clear to their rescuers that medical attention would be needed.
"They had been out there at least a week and miraculously survived, but they are pretty banged up," Marvick said. "One fellow appears to have been mauled and is missing and eye and is fighting some type of infection."

A GoFundMe page was formed to help source donations to fund the duo's veterinary bills. So far, more than $2,500 has been raised — roughly $1,000 above the projected goal.
"We are absolutely blown away by everyone's generosity and kindness in supporting these goats and helping get them to health and safety," Marvick said. "Carson and Gus are doing fantastic. The vet was able to come last week and give medicine, shots, take blood and stool samples and thoroughly check them out."
Fortunately, the two goats are "both looking pretty healthy now."
"Their personalities are starting to shine now that they feel safe — and they are honestly the sweetest pair."
Marvick describes Gus as a gentle goat who loves to snuggle, and Carson as a "sassy" goat with a lot of attitude.
The pair will be sent to a loving new home for them to live out the rest of their days, Marvick said.
"Any bonus donations, after vet bills are paid, will be sent with the goats to their new rescue," she said.
