Summer College Enrichment Programs: Do They Help?

We are often asked about the summer enrichment programs for students, as they relate to "getting the student into the college of choice."

We are often asked about the summer enrichment programs for students, as they relate to "getting the student into the college of choice."  Our answer is that many of them are EXCELLENT programs. But as far as helping the student get into his or her choice of colleges, not likely. Below are some of the reasons why they SHOULD be considered:

1. Usually college credit is awarded, anywhere from 3 units up to a semester (like the following link I will share)

2. They will give the student a taste of what it really will be like in the best fit college. Being surrounded with those of like minds (albeit different opinions), shared academic/research interests, focused rigor, and common goals are what one should look for in a college.

The "experience" will be memorable, and usually with a high price tag.  For the more well endowed programs (like Stanford, Hopkins, SEA, etc.), there are scholarships available for need. Worth the money??? That is a decision you will have to make as a family.

For those interested in Marine Biology or Oceanography who are already in college or those in high school, this is perhaps one of the most impressive programs we have seen: sea.edu/academics/high_school_programs
