The goal of the CHP is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated or unlicensed drivers. A sobriety/driver license safety checkpoint is a proven and effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations.
Drivers will be detained "only a few moments" while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint and checks their driver's licenses, the CHP announced.

Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked, according to the CHP.
Drivers under the influence of alcohol, drugs, and/or prescription or over-the-counter medications with "do not operate heavy machinery" warning labels will be arrested.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the CHP.
