On July 4th we celebrate the Declaration, by a group of brave, committed Patriots, of our Independence from a Government which taxed us without representation, tried to control the press and stole our assets, to be used for the benefit of others.
There was another group of citizens who did not want to break from Britain. These loyalists had many different reasons, some were scared of war, some were blessed by the system in place and others were not paying attention and thought it was a great deal to do about nothing. Actually, the fence sitters were the largest group.
What is seldom discussed is the large number of people who did not embrace the Declaration of Independence, and certainly did not embrace the “Tea Party” group fighting to break with the Establishment. When the War of Independence was won, some loyalists returned to Britain believing themselves to be loyal Subjects of the Crown.
As we celebrate July 4th this year we find our Country in a very similar situation. Many people are not paying attention. I’ve heard them called low information voters but that seems rude to me. Not everybody is interested in politics. However, add the people not paying attention, to the fence sitters, who are not sure what to believe, and add in the Progressives who would do away with such basic rights as the First Amendment, Second Amendment, Fourth Amendment, Ninth Amendment and the Tenth Amendment and we find ourselves at a cross roads in history.
I wish all of you a Happy Fourth of July. I will see many of you at the fireworks, others in the neighborhood with your families and still others in the store stocking up with supplies to enjoy this special day. Take a moment during this holiday to ponder the riches we have, where even the poorest enjoy more than most of the world. Enjoy the freedom’s allowing you to pursue your dreams regardless of where they lead. Think about the joy of what we are leaving for our families.
Next week it will be time to reengage and get back to protecting what many have died to give us…….Freedom.
