The utility urged customers to conserve energy from noon to 6 p.m., which are peak hours of energy use, set thermostats to 78 degrees or higher and turn off unneeded lights. Customers who use medical equipment at home should ensure they have sufficient standby battery power or a backup portable unit to protect against a power outage.

“An extended heat wave like the one forecast increases the likelihood of repair outages because when temperatures remain high overnight, electrical equipment gets no time to cool down and recover from the day's heat,'' according to the company.
Edison customers can obtain information about outages using the SCE outage map on its website. Outages can be reported at (800) 611-1911.
The utility recommended that customers:
-- turn off all unnecessary appliances and equipment;
-- use electric fans instead of air conditioning when practical;
-- shut off lights when leaving a room;
-- close drapes and blinds to keep out direct sunlight during hot periods;
-- avoid using evaporative coolers or humidifiers at the same time an air conditioner is running;
-- operate swimming pool equipment and energy-intensive appliances, such as dishwashers and dryers, during early morning and late evening hours; and
-- limit the opening and reopening of refrigerators.
