At the Movies: August 12

30 Minutes or Less, Final Destination 5, Glee the 3D Concert Movie, and The Help are all new in theaters this weekend.

The Help, which came out Wednesday, is “appalling, entertaining, touching and perhaps even a bit healing,” according to Tom Long of the Detroit News. Jen Chaney of the Washington Post thinks that Glee the 3D Concert Movie would have “worked just as well as a heavily promoted special television event broadcast over Thanksgiving weekend.”

30 Minutes or Less was almost universally panned, although Lou Lumenick of the New York Post said the movie “may be tasteless, moronic and lacking in any redeeming social value whatsoever. But for me, at least, it was gut-bustingly funny - perhaps the waning summer season’s ultimate guilty pleasure.” Fairing slightly better in reviews was Final Destination 5. Scott Bowles of USA Today wrote, “The Godfather II it isn’t, but for teens with money to burn, there are worse options to curdle blood.”
