Conan the Barbarian, One Day and Fright Night are new in theaters this weekend
There’s something for everyone at the movies this weekend, including romance, action and horror.
The revamp Fright Night, starring Colin Farrell, is receiving mostly positive reviews, with Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News saying it “knowingly blends ‘80s cheese with ’90s snark - a combination that works better than it sounds.” Reviews aren’t nearly as positive for Conan the Barbarian, which Richard Corliss of Time thinks is “a gaudily ornamented medieval banquet table groaning with junk food and open entrails.”
One Day, starring Anne Hathaway, tells the tale of a friendship that started on college graduation day. Hathaway plays a Brit, and according to Carrie Rickey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, her accent is “distracting” and “less Yorkshire than New York.” Ty Burr of the Boston Globe takes it a step further, calling the film “a miscast, underwritten, drably directed adaptation of a very popular novel. It’s the feel-bad film of the sumer and an almost perfect example of how not to turn a book into a movie.”
