At the Movies: Friday, June 24

Fans of Cars rejoice: the sequel hits theaters today in wide release. So far, reviews are mixed.

Writes Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times, “Cars 2 teaches gentle kid-friendly lessons about the importance of friendship and being yourself and introduces some great new characters in its parallel spy drama and auto racing plots.” The Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern was not as kind, saying, “The law of averages has finally caught up with the most remarkable studio in modern movie history, the dream factory that lived up to Buzz Lightyear’s joyous cry of ‘To infinity and beyond.’ This frenzied sequel seldom gets beyond mediocrity.”

Also out today is Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz as a bitter educator who wants nothing more than to escape the monotony of being a middle school teacher. USA Today’s Claudia Puig writes, “The film’s rhythms are disjointed, and there are tedious patches and gaping holes in the story. No one bothered to create anything beyond a vague outline of a superficial character.” Manohla Dargis of the New York Times was more generous, saying, “Ms. Diaz has found her down-and-dirty element in the kind of broad comedy that threatens to get ugly and more or less succeeds on that threat.”
