Are We Done With Easter?

While the celebration is over, Jesus Gift Lives On

Inspirational Message

Easter is over! Or is it? While we are done with, but probably still recovering from the commercial celebration, the Spiritual lives on. We remember because we are asked to by our Lord, and anyway – how can we forget what He did because His victory gained is what gives reason and purpose for life. Our children often with the help of discerning adults, have consumed copious amounts of chocolate eggs and are now back at school detoxing from sugar highs.

We live in an age of instant gratification, and there are few more explicit examples of this than tearing open the wrappers of a big chocolate Easter egg and enjoying the instantaneous taste of chocolate melting in a discerning mouth. And for those of us with a limited ability for delayed chocolate gratification, sitting back on a lawn chair and watching chocolate Easter eggs melt in a child’s mouth, and begin to spread over the surrounding areas elucidates responses varying from vicarious joy to parental concern.

My kids had a wonderful time searching for Easter Eggs. However, one of the younger ones was outraged when he discovered that some of the “eggs” contained coupons for special events instead of chocolates. He wanted chocolate Easter eggs! The thought of bypassing candy was unthinkable. My 12-year-old rationalized that by eating chocolate eggs, we are celebrating the renewal of life– the life that God has given us. I suggested he offer his services to the chocolate industry, which he politely declined but reminded me that the promise of eternal life brought on by Jesus’ resurrection brings meaning and purpose to our lives and is celebrated around the world.

Remembering is so important because it is an integral part of our story and provides substance for our spiritual life. In the words of the wise, “you don’t really know where you are going, unless you remember where you are coming from” – and while pondering that, don’t forget to cash in the ultimate coupon!
