In Search of "Praise."

Inspirational Message: Next time you run into a soldier, or someone in law-enforcement, take time to thank them in appreciation for what they do.

Hopefully, you had a restful July 4, safe in part as a result of those defending us.  Next time you run into a soldier, or someone in law-enforcement, take time to thank them in appreciation for what they do. Perhaps you will see a smile cross their faces!

Says the Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:8, “…and now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

The last part of that verse caught my attention.  Praise!  I have often wondered why there are so many examples of praise in the Scriptures.  Why is it so important?  . Type in the word “praise” on a search engine and the number of references within and from other sources are astounding!

Not only in our personal lives, but in our jobs at work, difficult and stressful events routinely occur.  Our response can impact not only our health, but the health of those around us.  On occasion in the hospital setting, I run into a healthcare provider who has a patient who no matter what is done for her/him complains!  If that is your experience, take a step back and a moment to think. The first time you try that can be difficult, especially if your response is emotionally fueled!  Time out!!  In this situation, can you think about the passage at the top, and find something to praise God for? Umm—it might initially be difficult!  Adds Dale Carnegie, "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving.”

Our responses to stressful situations can impact the types of hormones secreted into our brains.  Recent research has shown that from a neurological standpoint, “thinking realistically on the bright side” releases the same hormones that are secreted when we exercise for 20 minutes or so—the high comes as a result of endorphins being released.  Praising, and especially praising God no matter what your circumstances releases endorphins.  As the Psalmist, whose writings are full of praise exclaimed “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.”  Praise God!  (And don’t forget to exercise!!)
