Who is in Control?

Some thoughts on unpacking the almost new year.

Ever wonder how this year will turn out -- what the future has in store for you?

As we continue our journey in this new year, it could be both fun as well as stressful to have the gift of knowing the future -- after all, would you really want to know everything that will happen as the year unfolds? I guess knowing who will win the election could be helpful, or even unhelpful to know! And of course, there are a miriad of other things that I, don't know about you, but I would sure like to know! But then again, maybe not, and anyway life just doesn't work that way!

Mark Twain addresses this. Near the end of his life, he reflected: “I’m an old man now. I’ve lived a long and difficult life, filled with so many misfortunes. Most of which never happened.” And that’s exactly how it works. The mind is constantly toppling forward in this way.

Thus, God in His wisdom and mercy rarely shares much about the future, except that He walks with us, if we ask Him. What He does make clear is that it is important to take life one day at a time, and reassures us He is in control, even when life can appear chaotic.

Proverbs 3:5& 6 to "...Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, and in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight."

OK-fine, wouldn’t most of us appreciate "straight" paths? That could make life so much easier than the curves twists and sharp bends some of us experience! In looking at the bigger picture though, straight paths can also mean "the right paths"  (Psalm 23:3).

What God is offering is to walk with us and direct the course of our lives. Take Him up on that!

Blessings
