CSUSB appoints new dean for College of Arts and Letters

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Cal State San Bernardino has named Terry Ballman as the new dean of the university’s College of Arts and Letters.Β 

Ballman, who currently serves as special assistant to the provost at California State University, Channel Islands, will take up her new post on Aug. 1, said CSUSB Provost Andy Bodman.Β 

Ballman, who also is a professor of Spanish, served as chair of Spanish and languages and communications at CSUCI for the previous seven years.Β

β€œTerry has a substantial record of accomplishment as a faculty member and an academic administrator,” said Bodman. β€œShe has a keen sense of the CSU mission and excellent and varied experience in realms as diverse as Early Start and retention and graduation initiatives.” 

Ballman will replace Eri Yasuhara, who announced her retirement as dean of the CSUSB College of Arts and Letters earlier this year. Yasuhara served as dean of the college for 13 years.Β

Ballman joined CSUCI in fall 2002. A native Californian, she earned her B.A. and M.A. degrees from California State University, Long Beach, and her Ph.D. in Hispanic linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.Β 

Throughout her career she has held positions of responsibility, including department chair, coordinator of lower-division language programs, undergraduate bilingual and ESL adviser, single subject credential adviser and supervisor of student teachers.Β 

Ballman's research interests include the examination of the acquisition of Spanish by second language learners. She is the co-author of two Spanish-language textbooks and a volume for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Professional Development Series.Β 

The recipient of several teaching awards, Ballman is a frequent presenter of papers and workshops, and she has published on topics such as the acquisition of Spanish, lesson planning and student-centered instruction.Β
