Digital Cinema Workshop brings major Hollywood actors, directors to CSUSB

San Bernardino, Calif. -- Randal Kleiser, director of “Grease,” “The Blue Lagoon,” and other film industry blockbusters, is the programmer for California State University, San Bernardino’s second annualInternational Digital Cinema Workshop, running July 12-28.

“This workshop is designed for students and professionals who want to learn from, and network with, working directors,” says Kleiser. “We have assembled a diverse group of film industry pros who all have experience in college-level education – an opportunity not to be missed.”

Kleiser makes particular note of the Nina Foch Course, which is a hands-on acting/directing boot camp. Its participants use the concepts learned to make digital cinema shorts. The course will be taught by James Bontempo, a protégé and a teaching associate of Foch for eight years.

Major film industry directors participating in the Digital Cinema Workshop include John Badham (“War Games,” “Short Circuit”), Joe Dante (“Gremlins,” “The ‘Burbs”) and Donald Petrie (“Miss Congeniality,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”).

Acting greats appearing at the workshop will be Carl Weathers (“Rocky,” “Arrested Development”) and Diane Baker (“The Silence of the Lambs,” “Marnie”) and visual effects guru Jeffrey Kleiser (“Tron,” “Ra.One,” “X-Men”).

The comprehensive hands-on workshop will teach the art and technical craft of movie making in the digital cinema era. Led by a host of movie industry veterans, students of all ages will learn the “how-tos” of digital film making from pre-production to distribution.

Held on the CSUSB campus, which sits at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains, the two weeks of focused training will also feature exclusive learning expeditions to USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies and a major technological event in Hollywood.

Ralph Salmi, a former CSUSB professor and special assistant to the president for international programs, says that “there are no university rivals where students and dedicated practitioners spend two weeks together in a university setting designed specifically to draw out, instruct and encourage our students to pursue their respective fields of interest in digital cinema production.”

Local, national and international students may attend IDCW for college credit or solely for career development. Attendees can enroll in single-day class sessions or immersion in the full two-week program with the option of staying in the university’s apartment-style dorms.

Cost of the full program for the general public is $1,999, while the cost for students ranges from $1,349-$1,765. A 20 percent discount is being offered to the general public with the check out code “digi.”

The full workshop includes an opening reception, master classes, exclusive movie viewings, industry Skype sessions, the Nina Foch Seminar and an individual film project and wrap party.

Students attending the full workshop will finish the program with extensive acting and directing knowledge, film industry connections, and foundational knowledge to plan, shoot and edit a movie.
