SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Cal State San Bernardino’s Veterans Success Center, in collaboration with the Cal-Vet Education Collaborative, will offer an information workshop, “Hiring a Hero: Career Development for Student Veterans,” on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m.-noon.
The date was chosen in remembrance of the heroism of service members of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, said Veterans Success Center Director Marci Daniels.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the San Bernardino Employment Development Department at 658 East Brier Drive, in San Bernardino.

The training will focus on the most current strategies to guiding student veterans from the academic environment to gainful employment. It will provide valuable information about new programs in the Inland Empire that are available to veterans and service members. The programs have proven effective in creating rewarding career paths in a variety of fields.
“As educators, we work with student veterans every day to help them transition from the military to an academic environment,” Daniels said. “Of course, the journey does not stop there. We also need to help veterans reintegrate into the civilian workforce – a critical effort for the nation's economy and military.”

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for veterans is more than 10 percent among post 9-11 enlistees, which is higher than the national rate of 7.9 percent, said Daniels.
Both U.S. government programs and private industry are heeding the call to assist those job seekers who have made the ultimate commitment to their country, according to CareerCast.com. First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden head the Joining Forces jobs initiative, which has brought together 2,000 domestic companies that have pledged to hire 100,000 veterans and the spouses of active duty military members by the end of the year.
CSUSB student and U.S. Marine Corps reservist Kenny Jacobs will present a student perspective at the info session. His topic will illustrate how he is building a career in botany while completing his bachelor’s degree. Other CSUSB presenters include Valentina Watson, career development coordinator, who will facilitate a session titled “Assisting our Student Veterans with Career Development.”
