Loma Linda Poised To Raise Speed Limit On Mountain View

Loma Linda's Traffic Advisory Committee is recommending the council approve raising the speed limit along a section of Mountain View Avenue.

If it seems like most motorists along Mountain View Avenue are traveling faster than the posted speed limit, that’s because they are.

According to a speed survey conducted by the city, most of the traffic traveling down Mountain View between Van Leuven Street and Barton Road, is traveling at more than 40 miles per hour, above the posted 35 miles an hour.

On Thursday, the Traffic Advisory Committee voted unanimously to recommend raising the speed limit. The issue will be forwarded to the Loma Linda City Council for consideration.

“That is an anomaly section right there,” said Jeff Peterson, an associate engineer for Loma Linda. “We are asking the committee to allow us to raise the speed limit making it consistent with the rest of Mountain View.”

Cities survey the speeds of free flowing traffic on their streets every five years. Speeds are normally set according to how fast 85 percent of traffic is flowing. The last survey was conducted was commissioned by the city in 2007.

Initially, there was a safety issue along that stretch because of how narrow the road was, especially at the bridge, city officials said.

“There were a lot of rear end accidents in that area,” said Deputy Don Rusk. “But then they widened the bridge.”
