University of Redlands to Host Recital Featuring Renowned Organist Ken Cowan

The University of Redlands is hosting a third organ recital later this month to showcase additions made to the Memorial Chapel Casavant organ this past summer, a school representative announced Wednesday.

The artist performing will be Ken Cowan, who is considered one of North America's finest organists, U of R spokeswoman Patty Zurita said.

Cowan is Associate Professor of Organ and head of the organ program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

"Praised for his dazzling artistry, impeccable technique and imaginative programming by audiences and critics alike, he maintains a rigorous performing and recording schedule which takes him to major concert venues throughout America, Canada, Europe and Asia," Zurita said.

The event is scheduled at 3 p.m. Sunday Jan. 27 in the Memorial Chapel, built in 1927. During the summer of 2012, significant additions were made to the Memorial Chapel organ by the original builder, Casavant Frères of Canada.

The program is sponsored by the Inland Empire Chapter of The American Guild of Organists. It is free and open to the public.

A fourth recital is planned March 17, featuring Richard Elliott, principal organist of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.

The U of R Memorial Chapel has a capacity of 1,343 seats, with wheel chair seating available, according to the university. For more information, visit www.redlands.edu.
