Blog: NEWS FLASH: Power Plant Phase Out Initiative Qualifies for Ballot!

Resident-led initiative to phase out the AES power plant qualifies for the ballot!

We just received word from Los Angeles County that the Power Plant Phase Out Initiative petitions had more than enough signature to qualify for the ballot.  We should get the exact counts tomorrow, and I will publish the numbers as soon as I get them.

The next step is for the city council to perform their misterial duty to start actions to get the initiative on the March ballot. This should come up at Tuesday's Council meeting.

Over 9,500 signatures were gathered in just 40 days. Just under 6,000 valid Redondo voter signatures were required to make the ballot. Gathering that many valid signatures in such a short time is a testament to the tenacity of the volunteers and resident sentiment against a new power plant.

Congratulations and thanks to all the residents who spent their precious summer time collecting signatures, donating their hard earned money, and supporting our efforts in so many other ways. Special thanks to the NoPowerPlant.com leaders who tirelessly led the signature drive. And I'd be remiss if I didn't thank Councilman Brand for his efforts and steadfastness in the face of blistering Council attacks and vilification.
