137 Tickets Issued In 1 Day In Peninsula Traffic Safety Op

Local police officers say they made more than 150 traffic enforcement stops during the operation.

PACIFICA, CA — Law enforcement officers from across the Peninsula joined together this week to help keep local drivers safe. The latest San Mateo County Saturation Traffic Enforcement, or STEP, operation was held Wednesday.

"This was the seventh deployment of a collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County in 2018," STEP officials said in a news release. "This operation effort focused on traffic education and enforcement in Pacifica and Half Moon Bay."

In total, more than 150 traffic enforcement stops were made between the two cities, officials said. The officers issued 137 total citations, including some for the following reasons:

  • 46 for texting and cell phone violations
  • 29 for stop sign violations
  • 17 for speeding violations
  • 11 were for seatbelt violations

Two other drivers were caught driving without a proper license, officials said.

"The participating officers remained committed to making a high volume of traffic stops in this coordinated saturation effort, while maintaining the highest levels of community awareness and professionalism," the news release stated. "The number of stops and citations during this most recent deployment reflect a sustained enthusiasm for this program and traffic safety on the Peninsula."

Additional STEP deployments are expected to take place throughout the year in various cities.
