Belmont Police Nab 2 After Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle

Police say they first spotted the two men speeding in a stolen vehicle through town.

The following is a news release from the Belmont Police Department:

Two men were arrested Monday night after they led Belmont Police on a brief pursuit, which ended when they drove down a dead-end street.

On Monday night at approximately 11:30PM a Belmont Police officer on patrol observed a red 2014 Volkswagen Jetta traveling at a high rate of speed, westbound in the 600 block of Ralston Ave. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the Jetta attempted to evade him. A brief chase ensued through the Sterling Downs Neighborhood, which ended when the Jetta turned onto the 400 blk of Wessex Way, a dead-end street.

The Jetta stopped in the driveway of a residence, but not before colliding with the corner of the garage, causing minor damage to the home. The two occupants of the vehicle then fled into nearby back yards. A short time later one of the suspects, Tyler Johnston age 49 of Hayward, was located hiding in the bushes of a home the 400 blk of Wessex Way.

Units from both the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and San Mateo Police Department responded to assist Belmont Police in the search for the second suspect. The second suspect, Marlon Arbulu age 30 of San Mateo, was located by San Mateo Police officers a few blocks away on Oxford Court.

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident. The car was determined to have been stolen earlier in the day from a Volkswagen dealership in Dublin, CA. Johnson was arrested for prowling and Arbulu was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of narcotic paraphernalia and a warrant for violation of probation. Additional charges are pending.
