Daylong Redwood City Standoff Ends With Former Cop's Arrest

The local SWAT team helped apprehend the man following an hours-long standoff, officials said.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A former police officer was arrested following a day-long standoff and domestic violence allegations early Thursday morning at a home in Redwood City, a police spokesman said.

James McGee, 54, of Redwood City, allegedly assaulted a woman inside a home on Windsor Way before police received 911 calls at about 2 a.m., police spokesman Lt. Sean Hart said.

"Officers responded to the residence and contacted the victim in front of the residence," Hart said in a news release. "The female reported she was assaulted by a male subject who was still inside the residence."

Police said they found McGee inside the home alone. Officers contacted McGee but he initially refused to come out.

"Officers established a safety perimeter around the residence and continued to try to negotiate with the suspect to bring about a peaceful resolution throughout the morning but he refused to communicate with officers," Hart said.

Redwood City police eventually called in the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, San Mateo County Tactical Medics, Public Safety Communications and the Redwood City Fire Department for assistance with the case.

"The negotiations continued for several hours with the suspect eventually surrendering to members of the San Mateo County Regional SWAT Team," according to Hart.

McGee was taken into custody without significant injuries to anyone, Hart said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening and she has since been released, Hart said.

A search was conducted Thursday night to see if a gun was in the home. Hart said the victim was not shot. Hart said the outcome was positive even though it took a long time to convince McGee to come out of the home. Police had issued a shelter-in-place for residents in the area and had suggested some evacuate.
