📰 News we're reading

• Two Stone Lions and a Park (newsbreak.com) — Wellesley Park, the first suburban development in Redwood City west of El Camino Real, still shows off its original 1888 design, from curving streets to its central park. The grand stone gate is gone, but the two stone lions at Wellesley Crescent still guard a neighborhood that preserves some of the Bay Area's earliest commuter-suburb history.

• 'Game on': Bay Area now epicenter of California flu cases (newsbreak.com) — Redwood City is currently seeing high levels of flu virus in local wastewater, part of an unusually early and intense Bay Area flu surge. Health experts urge residents, especially high-risk groups and families with young children, to get vaccinated promptly and seek care quickly if they develop breathing problems, as flu and COVID-19 are circulating together.

• Americans are reading less. Bay Area 'introvert happy hours' are booming (mercurynews.com) — Silent Book Club, a Bay Area–born "introvert happy hour" movement, now includes a chapter in Redwood City, offering locals quiet, low-pressure group reading time to build community and focus. Chapters across the region are hosting special read-ins Oct. 4–10 for Banned Books Week, with nearby events in San Mateo, Fremont, Pleasanton, Daly City and Hayward that Redwood City residents can easily join.
