Police Swarm Peninsula City In Search, Arrest Warrant Operation
Police activity was spotted throughout the city on Wednesday morning related to an ATF operation.

SAN MATEO, CA — Law enforcement officers from multiple jurisdictions converged on San Mateo on Wednesday morning, as part of a "criminal investigation that included search and arrest warrants at a number of locations within San Mateo," police announced. The operation started around 6 a.m.
Police said that during their operation, residents may hear "a loud explosive like sound" due to "the use of distractionary devices" — and though they may sound like gunshots, they are not.
"The safety of our community, our officers, and all parties involved is our first priority and this operation was planned to ensure that was successfully accomplished," police said in a statement.

San Mateo police said additional information on the investigation was not immediately available, as SMPD is not the lead agency in the case. The search warrants were served by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
"Within the next few days, the lead agency will make an announcement of the details of the investigation and we will share that information with our community," police said. "We thank you for your time and patience on this matter."
ATF spokeswoman Alexandria Corneiro said in an email that additional details couldn't be immediately released "for the safety of everyone involved." She added that the agency will release more details when it's able to.
