Redwood City Man Claims Insanity in Stabbing Death of Girlfriend: Prosecutors

San Mateo, CA – A man suspected of stabbing his girlfriend to death in her San Mateo home late last year recently entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, San Mateo County prosecutors said.

Redwood City man Anthony Kirincic, 22, entered the plea on Thursday in front of Judge Lisa Novak, who set Sept. 7 as the date the court will see a doctor's report of Kirincic's mental state at the time of the stabbing.

Kirincic remains in custody without bail, according to prosecutors.

Kirincic served 120 days in jail for domestic violence before allegedly he stabbed 34-year-old Elizabeth Straw to death at her home in the 1500 block of B Street on Nov. 28.

Police responded to the home at noon and found Straw with stab wounds. She died there, prosecutors said.

The stabbing occurred just a few days after Kirincic was released from jail.

Kirincic was not at Straw's home when police arrived, according to prosecutors.

A manhunt and then surveillance of Kirincic's parent's home in Redwood City led to his arrest Nov. 30 after a SWAT team stormed the home.

Straw was a 2009 graduate of San Francisco State University and a graphic designer.

A pretrial conference is set for Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at which time a date for a jury trial will be set, prosecutors said.

Kirincic's attorney Savas Loukedis was not immediately available for comment.
