Redwood City Man Identified In Deadly Rollover Crash

CHP officials say the man was thrown approximately 30 feet as his vehicle rolled.

PESCADERO, CA — A man who was found dead Tuesday morning after crashing his Mercedes-Benz into a dirt embankment in the unincorporated Pescadero area of San Mateo County has been identified as 49-year-old Jose Alfredo Peters of Redwood City, according to the county coroner's office.

The crash was reported around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on Pescadero Creek Road east of Stage Road, however it's unclear when it actually happened, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel. Investigators believe Peters crashed his vehicle Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

Officials think the man may have been speeding when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"It appears the driver was traveling eastbound on Pescadero Creek Road at a high rate of speed sometime during the night," Montiel said in a news release. "The driver failed to negotiate a curve of the road allowing the Mercedes to veer off the roadway where it collided with a dirt embankment."

After crashing into the embankment, the car rolled and landed on its roof, Montiel said.

"The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was fully ejected and came to rest approximately 30 feet from the Mercedes," the officer said.

Montiel said "it appears that drugs and alcohol may have been a factor" in the crash.
