Election Results Show Zane Wins, Measure D Passes Narrowly

Tabulation of votes gives School District Measure solid support, with 66.9% of the vote, 66.7% required for passage

Voters in Sonoma County re-elected two supervisors and selected two Santa Rosa City Council members to square off in November for a third seat on the board, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's election.

District 3 Supervisor Shirlee Zane handily defeated her challenger, former Rohnert Park Councilman Tim Smith, whom she also bested in the 2008 election. Zane won with nearly 63 percent of the vote.

She said the results show that the district's voters support her leadership on pension reform and that she will continue to take the lead in those efforts. "I am honored and grateful to the district's constituency for their vote of support," Zane said.

Smith said during his campaign that Zane and the other supervisors had not gone far enough in tackling pension reform. He was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.

All county school board measures were also ahead, most of them over the 55% level required for passage. Measure D, affecting Rohnert Park - Cotati, was ahead by about a 2/1 margin, 66.9% YES to 33.1% NO, just above the 66.7% required for passage.

In Sonoma County voting, Rep. Mike Thompson was well ahead of Randy Loflin in the 5th Congressional District, 73% to 15%, while in the hotly contested 2nd Congressional district had Jared Hufmann in first with 37% and fellow Democrat Norman Solomon moving into second place with 15.4%, just ahead of Republican candidate Daniel Roberts with 14/6% .

Solomon also finished in second in Marin County, but the total vote for the position throughout the Congressional Distict, which extends north to the Oregon border, is expected to produce a run-off between the Democratic candidate Huffman and the Republican Roberts.
