ELECTION RESULTS: Sonoma County 2016 Primary Election

Patch's live roundup of Tuesday's election results from across Sonoma County.

SONOMA COUNTY - With voter registration across California at an all-time high, millions of people were expected to head to the polls to cast their votes in Tuesday's presidential primary election.

As of the May 23 voter registration deadline, the California Secretary of State reported that 17,915,053 Californians were registered to vote, which accounts for 72.29 percent of the state's eligible voting population. What's more, that's the highest ever total statewide voter registration heading into a primary election, according to the state.

Not surprisingly, there are far more registered Democrats than Republicans in the state, with 44.82 percent for the former and 27.29 for the latter.

Here in Sonoma County, 253,860 people are registered to vote. The county's party-split is much more pronounced than the state average, with 54.00 percent Democrat and 20.56 percent registered as Republican voters.

“In the 45 days leading up to the voter registration deadline, there was a huge surge in voter registration—total statewide voter registration increased by nearly 650,000," Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. "Part of this surge was fueled through social media, as Facebook sent a reminder to all California users to register to vote. It is clear that Californians are engaged and excited about this election. Now the next step is to turn out and vote!”
