Joe Rodota Trail Closed To 'Re-Establish Safe, Clean Environment'

Occupants of homeless encampments along the trail were informed of the closure and offered services and shelter, officials said.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Authorities have temporarily closed the Joe Rodota Trail between Dutton and Roseland Avenue in Santa Rosa. The closure, which began at 8 a.m. Wednesday, is so that the personnel with the county, city, contractors and partners can remove "unlawful encampments and reestablish a safe and clean environment for all trail visitors," Santa Rosa police said in a statement.

It is likely the trail will remain closed for several days for the waste removal and trail maintenance, police said.

Occupants of the encampments were informed of the closure and offered services and shelter, county officials said in a news release.

"Santa Rosa Police Department, Sonoma County Regional Parks and the Sonoma County Community Development Commission through its service provider partners, including the Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST), will coordinate closely to facilitate access to services and shelter that are responsive to each individual’s needs and ultimately provide a path to permanent stable housing," Briana Khan of the county administrator's office stated in the news release.

"There is sufficient capacity in the homeless system of care to safely shelter or house all encampment occupants," Khan said. "Additionally, Sonoma County Regional Parks will store all the personal property of occupants who are relocating, if requested, for up to 60 days."
